Workshop Description: This workshop will expose the marginalization and oppression of the d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind individuals and the struggles that they face on a day-to-day basis. We will discuss circumstances and situations where others willingly and often unknowingly oppress and marginalize them. We will also discuss ways to recognize, expose, and remediate such circumstances; and how to become an advocate, and an active part of the solution.
Instruction will begin with an overview of historical and present marginalization and oppression of the d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind, including relevant legislation. The RID Code of Professional Conduct and the EIPA standards will be discussed in relation to the marginalization and oppression of the d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind. Case studies will be presented for analysis. Perspectives and interviews will be shared by various people, from within - to those outside of the d/Deaf Community. Participant discussion is expected to occur throughout the training session. NOTE: There are two separate dates for ONE workshop that the attendees must be present for both dates to gain the full CEUs.
Educational Objectives: The Participant will be able to:
Recognize and describe historical and present marginalization and the oppression of the d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind individuals. Effectively discuss and remediate the marginalization and the oppression of the d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind individuals. Cite and describe relevant federal and state legislation regarding the marginalization and the oppression of the d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind individuals. Discuss and apply the RID Code of Professional Conduct and EIPA tenants regarding marginalization and the oppression of the d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind individuals. Discuss and use case studies related to advocate against the oppression and marginalization of the d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind individuals. Demonstrate and discuss learned remediation and advocacy techniques in mock situations.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Rev. John Lovas is Deaf and is an ordained pastor and has been practicing ministerial counseling and leadership within the Deaf community for over 30 years. He studied Pastoral Ministry at New Orleans Theological Seminary.
John Lovas has been actively engaged in mentoring local interpreters for more than 30 years and often provides services as a Deaf Interpreter. He has been recognized as a national speaker and teacher, who has provided training and presentations that have consistently received high ratings for both style and content. He has also been actively involved in advocacy and has become a helpful resource for the Deaf community worldwide.
He presently serves as the pastor of Canal Boulevard Baptist Deaf Church, also known as “New Orleans Deaf Church”, since 1996. This is one of the few Deaf owned and run churches in the USA. Before that, he served as pastor of Acadiana Baptist Church of the Deaf in Lafayette, LA from 1991 TO 1996.
This workshop is sponsored by Louisiana Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, a chapter of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. LRID is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for continuing education activities, New Orleans Sign Language Services. This Power, Prejudice, and Oppression (PPO) workshop offers a total of 1.0 CEUs for Target audience being all level interpreters and ITP students with Little to Some Prior Knowledge of topic content. CEUs, CMPs and certificates are only provided to those who attend the whole workshop. Scholarships are available. The workshop atmosphere will promote an environment of mutual respect, non-discrimination and free from bias. Special accommodation and interpreter requests must be submitted no later than November 15, 2023. Registration is fully refundable up to 2 days prior to the event.
