Workshop Presented by

Dr. Daniel Burch

February 18, 2021

7:00pm to 8:30pm

Location: Online Zoom

Cost: $35

Sign Language Interpreting begins in every country, world-wide with Deaf people, family members, educators, and religious workers coming together. Oddly enough, interpreting in religious settings has been traditionally looked down upon. I think, here in America, it is the separation of church and state, and the resultant attitude that certification does not, therefore, apply to religious interpreters that has added to this unfortunate reality. The times are, however, changing.

Workshop Goal: To introduce students of American Sign Language to the lexicon of notable people, places, and things in Judeo-Christian American Sign Language.

Workshop Description: The workshop will be conducted virtually. The focus will be on vocabulary development. Signs variations from the participants will be welcomed and analyzed.

Workshop Presenter: Dr. Daniel Burch has been an American Sign Language interpreter for nearly 50 years. Twenty-five of those years included Interpreting in the Presbyterian Church. In all of those years, Judeo-Christian Signs appeared across all interpreting venues. Interpreters need to be familiar with the entire cultural experience of Deaf people, including their spiritual life.

This workshop is sponsored by New Orleans Sign Language Services. A certificate will of completion will be provided at the completion of this workshop. The workshop atmosphere will promote an environment of mutual respect, non-discrimination and free from bias.

2 Amazing Topics on One Saturday! (.6 CEUs) Interpreters in Medical Settings & Interpreting in Legal Settings 101 Workshop Workshop Presented by Dr. Daniel Burch October 26, 2019 at 9am -- 4pm 5320 and 5324 Canal Boulevard, New Orleans, LA 70124 (LRID Members - $45 /Non-LRID Members - $65 / Students - $35) Workshop Description: Interpreting in Medical Settings--9am-12pm--As the American population ages, we increasingly find ourselves in medical situations: from simple checkups to life-threatening conditions. Of all situations, medical situations may make us wrinkle our brows in the application of our Code of Professional Conduct. The terminology includes body part labels, procedures, and medications. And what is this HIPAA thing? How do we handle ourselves this without a medical degree? Instruction will begin with an overview of the growth and development of interpreting in medical settings, including relevant legislation. The RID CPC will be discussed in relation to professional behavior in medical settings. Case studies will be presented for analysis. Participant discussion is expected to occur throughout the training session. Interpreting in Legal Settings 101--1pm-4pm--“I am afraid of legal interpreting. The court room intimidates me.” As well it should. It is designed to do so! Legal interpreting has its tense moments, but the majority of work is rather routine. However, it can never be routine if you know nothing about it, or have not had its inner workings somewhat demystified. This workshop is designed to provide an introduction to interpreting within the legal system (civil and criminal). Instruction will begin with an overview of the growth and development of interpreting in legal settings, including relevant legislation. The RID Code of Professional Conduct will be discussed in relation to professional behavior in legal settings. Case studies will be presented for analysis. Participant discussion is expected to occur throughout the training session. ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Daniel Burch has been a certified interpreter, practicing within the community for over 45 years. His national and international presentations have consistently received high ratings for both style and content.
